The London Wax Museum was the first wax museum opened , in 1835. Marie Grosholtz, born in 1761, better known as Madame Tussaud, is responsible for the birth of the eponymous museum. She began her career modeling death masks for famous victims of the French Revolution, such as Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. She displayed these masks in public and moved to London in 1802, where she established her wax museum.
In 1825, the museum opened and has since undergone several locations and expansions. After the artisan’s death in 1850, her grandchildren moved the attraction to its current location on Marylebone Road.
