4 Steps to Dealing with Anxiety When Travelling

Tired of work, facing traffic jams, and fighting with your partner will definitely make you feel bored. That’s why many people yearn for holidays. Even though the holiday you envision feels very enjoyable, some people, including you, have experienced anxiety. The holiday that should make you happy actually makes you scared and uncomfortable. To overcome anxiety when travelling, consider the following tips.

Tips for dealing with anxiety when traveling

Vacations are one way to reduce stress . However, holidays can also cause feelings of anxiety . Meeting strangers, worrying about your family at home, or being afraid of missing something can be a source of anxiety when travelling. Vacations that are supposed to help you calm down actually make you anxious.

Martin Antony, Ph.D., a psychology lecturer at Ryerson University, Toronto, told Self that anxiety when travelling usually occurs when you don’t know what to expect and are in an uncontrolled and unplanned situation. However, in general people will feel anxious about their personal safety while travelling.

So you can partake in your time off smoothly and easily, you should beat nervousness in the accompanying ways:

1. Make plans and preparations before travelling

On every trip, there are bound to be things that are not as expected. For this reason, make a thorough plan. Not plans for activities at the holiday destination, but about problems that will arise and their solutions.

Even though the possibility is small, at least you can relieve some of the stress and prepare yourself for various possibilities. Apart from that, you need to understand that the anxiety you feel does not always lead to bad things. It could be that anxiety can prevent you from making mistakes while travelling .

If you are on holiday to a place you have never been before, make sure you know what the route is, the weather there, and what clothes are suitable for you to wear during your holiday. Not only that, there are other things you need to know and prepare, such as:

  • Review the expiration date of passports, visas and other identifying data
General knowledge of the language, so that it is easier for you to interact
  • Prepare any medicines you may need
  • The number you can call in case of an emergency

2. When your thoughts start to wander, try to think logically

Even though you need to think about things that could happen without you wanting them, don’t let yourself get carried away with unreasonable anxiety. Try to digest whatever you are afraid of; whether this could actually happen or not. This way, you can throw away fears and insecurities that you don’t really need to worry about.

3. Use experience as a lesson

Anxiety can arise because of unpleasant experiences that you have previously had. However, don’t forget this experience. It would be better if you turned this experience into a lesson so you can avoid or overcome it.

You can also learn from the experiences of other people who may have travelled to your destination. Ask what the situation is like there, what needs to be prepared, etc.

4. Face anxiety

There are many ways that you can relieve anxiety when traveling and make you calmer. Try following the following ways so that you can control your anxiety .

  • Make a list of your favorite songs that you can listen to a few days before your trip. Classical music, for example. This type of music can lower your heart rate while reducing blood pressure and stress hormones.
  • Close your eyes and imagine a peaceful place. Imagining in detail what you feel comfortable with can help relieve feelings of fear and worry and improve your mood.
  • Regulate your breath. Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly is the easiest way to do it. Do it several times until you really feel calm.
