Eiffel Tower: what to know before visiting Paris’ postcard

Opened in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was designed exclusively for the Paris Universal Exhibition of that year. Originally erected to represent the industrial strength of France, the Iron Lady is today one of the main tourist monuments on the planet and is one of the most visited in France.

In this article we will present tips for getting to know the Tower and making the dream that lives in your imagination come true. Let’s go?

What to see at the Eiffel Tower in Paris?

From the Tower you can see the Arc de Triomphe , the Grand Palais , the Louvre , the Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral and even the beautiful Sacré Coeur basilica .

For the latter, everything will depend on the sky in Paris. If it’s clear, the view goes far! At the top of the Tower, posters offer explanations about the city of lights’ famous tourist attractions .

The divisions inside the Eiffel Tower

For many visitors, the attractions inside the Eiffel Tower are a separate program and guarantee unforgettable memories. As we have already discovered, the Eiffel Tower consists of three floors.

  • The first floor is particularly popular for the glass floors;
  • The second stage is famous for offering stunning views of Paris;
  • The top ( sommet ) of the Eiffel Tower is recognized as the highest public observation deck in the European Union. This title is not for nothing and offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the city.

Restaurants inside the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower offers several gastronomic options that, although they are of quality, require a slightly more robust budget.

There are two main restaurants in the Eiffel Tower that can be reserved when purchasing the ticket via the official website or free of charge (at risk of overcrowding, I don’t recommend going without a reservation).

  • Madame Brasserie : led by chef Thierry Marx, the restaurant offers sweet and savory buffets and drinks. The Pierre Hermé “macaron bar” on the 2nd floor is popular, as is the champagne offering at the top of the Eiffel Tower;
  • Jules Verne Restaurant : popular restaurant, recognized above all for being run by the star chef Frédéric Anton. Jules Verne is situated on the 2nd floor.

For Madame Brasserie, for information purposes, the complete dinner menu (starter, main course and dessert) costs from €100 .

If you prefer to have lunch at Jules Verne, the full menu (without drinks) starts at €140 . It’s a steep price even for the Paris average, but the price is justified as it is a restaurant located in the most famous tourist spot on the planet.

Eiffel Tower souvenirs

If you want to leave the Tower taking home souvenirs such as keychains, mugs, cotton bags and t-shirts, you will be well served by the little shop that serves visitors. However, in my opinion, the prices are out of the question.

Keychains and mugs cost no less than €10, t-shirts and bags vary depending on the prints, but expect to pay at least €30. Similar items, although unofficial, can be purchased for a fraction of the cost in nearby stores.

Discover the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower was inaugurated on March 31, 1889 after exactly two years and two months of construction. Then the tallest building in the world (330 meters high), the Tower was built to be the main work of the 1889 Universal Exhibition, which had the French Revolution as its guiding thread.

Interestingly, it was predicted that the Tower would be destroyed after the end of the Exhibition, an idea that was rejected after the realization that the monument had become an immediate and unprecedented success. Imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower, how absurd it would be!
